What Is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is a medicinal herb known by many names: Indian ginseng, winter cherry, and Withania somnifera. In traditional medicine, Ashwagandha root powder has frequently been used to improve sexual endurance, general fitness, and sexual performance. In studies, it has been shown to have health benefits for both men and women. Ashwagandha has been used for everything from libido improvement to the treatment of anxiety.

The Benefits of Ashwagandha

1. Ashwagandha as an Aphrodisiac

Ashwagandha is known as being an aphrodisiac and a hormone stabilizer. Men may find their interest in sex waning due to hormonal imbalances. This can be counteracted through the use of ashwagandha.

2. Ashwagandha as an Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

It’s believed that ashwagandha promotes blood flow, which improves genital responsiveness and sensitivity. Erectile dysfunction is often a matter of poor blood flow, and the only medical treatments are often dangerous pharmaceuticals. Ashwagandha is a safe way to address these issues.

3. Ashwagandha as a Testosterone Booster

For men, it’s believed ashwagandha can improve testosterone function, which can improve endurance and physical fitness. Both endurance and physical fitness lead to better sexual health by making sexual encounters more satisfying. Testosterone itself can treat many underlying conditions leading to erectile dysfunction or a loss of sexual desire.

4. Ashwagandha as a Longevity Treatment

Ashwagandha is able to reduce the negative side effects of aging, which, in turn, can keep men active and vital. By increasing physical performance and endurance, the medicinal herb is able to fight off many signs of aging, including decreased interest in sex.

5. Ashwagandha Treats Anxiety

Ashwagandha can treat anxiety and stress, both of which are often seen to adversely impact sexual function. After an individual experiences ED or a loss of sexual appetite, they can often become anxious about their performance, which only compounds their issues. Ashwagandha can be used to treat this.

6. Ashwagandha as an Overall Health Booster

Ashwagandha has been used throughout history to improve sexual vitality, endurance, and performance. Through increasing testosterone, it can improve sexual performance over time. It can be used both for loss of sexual function (erectile dysfunction) and loss of sexual desire (libido).

Ashwagandha has been also used for:

Note that these uses for the root have not been fully explored, so there is not much conclusive research available.

How to Take Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha can be taken in capsule form as an extract or a powder, or even made into a tea. In general, ashwagandha dosage ranges from 125 mg to 1,250 mg per day. The most common dosage is a 450 to 500 mg capsule, which can be taken either once or twice a day. Individuals can adjust their dosage based on their performance, though they shouldn’t exceed the recommended amounts.

Ashwagandha Side Effects

As with any type of medicinal herb, there may be some side effects when taking ashwagandha. A sufficiently large dose of the medicinal herb can cause gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, and upset stomach. Headaches and difficulty sleeping have also been reported for those who take large amounts of ashwagandha. As ashwagandha is believed to increase testosterone production, some side effects may also emerge from the increased levels of hormones.

Where to Get Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha powder and ashwagandha tea can both be found on Amazon, in health stores, and through fitness and health merchants on the Internet. Do note that it’s important to get ashwagandha from a reputable source, as it may not be as potent otherwise. As a medicinal herb and supplement, it may not be controlled as effectively as medications. It may not always be possible to know how strong a given dosage of ashwagandha is, especially in tea form.
